“Stay or Go Abroad ? The Struggles of Building a Future in Nepal”
“Should I stay here or go abroad? Many say that whatever you do, do it in your own country, and I’ve seen people start businesses here in Nepal. But around 90% of those people have already gone abroad eventually—some after one year, some after three years, and some after five years. This includes some of my friends. What could be the reasons for this? Based on what I’ve understood and observed, here are the reasons:
Nepal lacks policies that support businesses. It’s hard to find clients, the income is low, and you have to pay taxes in so many places. For example, even the house tax—if you’re running a business from a rented house, you have to pay the tax, not the landlord. There’s tax on everything. Yes, there are taxes abroad too, but the earnings are better there. If you want to register a private limited company and run it, there are so many hassles—taxes, audits—you have to pay, and that’s fine, but it’s tough for small-scale businesses. The registration fees for online businesses are so high that it’s not even worth mentioning. The cost of living is increasing every day, making it hard for small businesses to grow.
Now, regarding jobs—the situation is even worse. It’s a mess. Yes yes, for some it is good here, what about when we compare data with number of degree holders ? So, rather than just sitting around talking about the country, focus on building your future first. Take care of your family. These leaders and political parties can’t do anything for the country or its people. It’s better to go abroad. Yes, if you have some money, a backup fund, and an idea, you can try in Nepal, but if not, it’s better to go abroad.”
