Nepali people celebrate Dashain, also known as Vijaya Dashami, as one of the most significant festivals of the year. It is a celebration of the triumph of good over evil, rooted in Hindu mythology.
Many historians believe Dashain became widespread in Nepal around the time of the Malla Dynasty (12th to 18th century), when Hinduism became prominent in the Kathmandu Valley, though it could date even further back, given its connection to ancient Hindu scriptures.
Nepali people celebrate Dashain to commemorate the victory of good over evil, and to celebrate family and unity:Â
to honor the victory of good over evil, goddess Durga’s triumph over the demon Mahishasura. It’s a time for family gatherings, blessings, and tika rituals,
celebrated for over a thousand years.
