Child Safety Online is our major responsibility in this today’s internet world. For ensuring child’s safety online, setting up parental controls in apps and devices is major step that we must apply. This kind of parental control approach will allow us to monitor activity of our child online, limit the un-appropriate contents, manage screen time on daily basis and prevent them from making un-authorized purchases. Most smartphones and tablets come with built-in parental control features that are easy to activate. For example, on both iPhones and Android devices, you can set restrictions on apps, websites, and content ratings to ensure your child only accesses age-appropriate material. Now let’s see the basic settings found in these devices, with time to time updates / upgrades location and follow through of these settings might be changes, so consider that.

To enable parental controls on an iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Screen Time > Turn on Screen Time. From there, you can set a passcode that only you know, so your child cannot change the settings. Under Content & Privacy Restrictions, you can restrict explicit content, block certain websites, and prevent changes to privacy settings. You can also manage App Limits to restrict how long your child can use specific apps and set Downtime to limit device usage during certain hours, such as bedtime.

On Android devices, parental controls can be set up through the Google Family Link app, which allows you to create a Google account for your child and manage their activities. After installing the app, you can set screen time limits, approve or block apps, and see how much time your child spends on different apps. To enable basic controls directly on an Android device, go to Settings > Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls > Set up Parental Controls. Here, you can restrict access to apps, content, and features based on your child’s age and customize restrictions for purchases in Google Play. Regularly reviewing these settings helps ensure that your child’s online experience remains safe and secure.
